The MOD 10 program is the backbone of credit card number generating software. To be more detailed about it, here is how the MOD 10 program and the credit card number generator software work:

The credit card number generating software creates a random 13-digit or a 16-digit number, depending on what is required.
The software then drops the last digit of that string of numbers. That digit is called the check digit.
All the digits in the odd positions such as the first digit, third, fifth, seventh, and so on, are multiplied by 2.
If any of them is greater than 9, then 9 has to be subtracted from the result.
After all of the numbers are multiplied and subtracted, the results have to be summed up.
The numbers in the even position, such as the second digit, fourth, sixth, and so on, are added to the result gained in the previous step.
After summing it all up, add the number that you dropped in the first step to the result of the last step. If the resulting number is divisible by ten, then the number generated is considered to be a valid credit card number.

The software then gives the generated credit card number to the user.
