Information On Discover Credit Cards

Discover Bank

Discover was first released by Sears in 1985. Since then, it has grown into one of the major credit card companies in the world. Today, the credit card is operated by Discover Bank. When the card was first established, it was meant to help retail giant Sears offer more financial services. Unlike other cards at the time, the Discover credit card offered no yearly fee and offered higher-than-average credit limits. This made it very attractive to customers.

Today, more than 50 million cardholders have Discover cards and the cards are accepted at more than 4 million locations. Unfortunately, Discover is not widely accepted overseas, unlike major competitors Visa and MasterCard. This makes this credit card far less attractive for customers who tend to travel often. All Discover cards begin with the numbers 6011,6500-6509 or the numbers of 650000-650999. All cards have numbers 16 digits long.

MasterCard

The MasterCard was introduced in 1966. It was created by a number of banks who issued credit and established MasterCharge. Today, the company is a group owned by the more than 25 000 companies that issue MasterCard credit cards. In recent years, MasterCard has been at the center of a number of controversies for what has been seen as heavy-handed business practices. The company has tried to force customers at some venues to purchase tickets only through MasterCard credit cards. Also, the company has aggressively targeted those who have used their trademark in parodies. Most recently, MasterCard has developed a payment system called the PayPass, which allows customers to pay for purchases quickly, without having to swipe a card.

Japanese Credit Bureau

JCB, or Japanese Credit Bureau, is a major credit card company. It is based in Japan. First founded in 1961, JCB is the major credit card in Japan. Worldwide, the card is accepted in close to 200 countries and at more than 11 million establishments. It is a less popular card in North America, however. Until quite recently, it has been mostly accepted by travel services such as hotels and airlines. Now, however, some major North American Japanese restaurants and stores are accepting the card and some department stores are also accepting the credit card. All JCB credit cards begin with the numbers 1800 or 2131 and all are 15 digits long.

Visa International Service Association

VISA stands for Visa International Service Association. It is a very popular credit card brand that is operated by more than 20 000 companies. All Visa cards begin with the number 4 and all are 13 or 16 digits long. Visa cards were first introduced in 1976. Today, these credit cards have an exclusive sponsorship deal with the Olympic games and the cards are accepted at more than 24 million locations worldwide. The card can also be used at ATM machines internationally.

By knowing the facts about various credit card companies, you are one step closer to finding the best credit cards for you.
