This article informs you about the major banks and financial institutions that provide credit card services. Besides providing names of major players this article also tells you about details such as history of the company, current operations and their product/service style. The article throws light on:
  • Which are the major players that offer credit card service?
  • Why VISA is treated as a popular credit card brand?
  • The role of American Express Bank in the field of credit cards
There are many credit card companies or credit card banks offering credit and cards to customers. If you look at the front of your credit card, you will likely see a name such as Visa or MasterCard. Whenever you use your card, the establishment where you are buying will likely ask you for the name of your credit card. They will ask you which credit card company your card is associated with.

While you need to know your credit card companies or credit card banks in order to make a purchase, knowing this information can also help you determine which credit card is best for you. Each card company is known for specific things. Consider:

American Express Bank

American Express is a large international financial services organization. It is based in the United States and is most known for its credit card and traveler's checks. However, American Express also offers mutual funds, broker services, travel services, insurance, and financial consulting and advising services.

The company was founded in 1850, when three entrepreneurs - Henry Wells, William Fargo, and John Butterfield - created an express service. By 1882, American Express was offering money orders and was eyeing the European market. By 1891, the company had launched traveler's checks to help American travelers who were finding it challenging to obtain cash easily overseas. This venture allowed American Express to become truly global in scope. By 1946, the company was considering adding charge cards to its many services, but it was not until 1958 that the first cards were issued.

All American Express cards begin with the digits 34 or 37 and all cards have numbers that are 15 digits long. Today, the company issues many types of cards, from very low-limit student cards to the most exclusive cards. In 1999, the company released its very elite Centurion Card, which offers many benefits to the affluent and comes with a hefty $1,000 US yearly fee. The company also released its innovative Blue from American Express card. Created for the young market, this card features a special chip that has many functions and allows for easier card use.

Citigroup

Citigroup is the company that releases Citi credit cards. The company offers a wide range of credit cards, ranging from student credit cards to exclusive reward credit cards. Citi was first founded in 1812 in New York. Since then, it has grown into a considerable global presence, offering both business and residential customers many types of financial services, ranging from insurance to credit to banking services. Today, Citi credit cards are accepted in more than 110 countries and in more than 30 million locations. If you travel a great deal, Citi credit cards are good choice, as the company promises to replace your card anywhere overseas within one day. If you lose your card domestically, it only takes one hour to replace a lost or stolen card.

Diners Club

Diners Club was established by entrepreneurs Frank X. McNamara, Ralph Schneider and Alfred Bloomingdale. It was the first independent card company. It was also the first card to encourage the idea of paying at merchants. When it was established, Diners Club attempted to sign up many merchants and restaurants in order to allow Diners Club members to pay at these establishments with their cards.

All Diners Club cards begin with the numbers 300-305 and the numbers 38. All credit cards issued by this company have numbers that are 14 digits long. Today, the card is part of the MasterCard company network. This allows Diners Club customers to use their cards at more than 24 million establishments internationally.
