Bank Identification Number In a credit card number, the initial string of six digits form the bank identification number (also known as the Issuer Identifier). This set of numbers is a code to identify the bank or financial institution that issued the card and in what country it was issued. BIN numbers can serve an important function in validating credit card transactions. For instance, if a card's BIN number indicates that it was issued in a foreign country while the address provided is in the United States, the discrepancy could be a red flag pointing to credit card fraud. This is called a "BIN check." There are BIN databases online that will allow a merchant to enter the first six digits of a suspicious card number and discover where it was issued and by what institution. For example a card beginning with "435610" is a Visa gold card issued by Bank of America in the United States. More Credit-Card Terms Explained |
