Cardholder Information Security Program (CISP) In June 2001 the Visa credit card company instituted the Cardholder Information Security Program (or CISP) for the purpose of protecting and securing cardholder data at all points within the transaction system. The goal of CISP is to make sure that Visa cardholders, merchants who accept the cards, and any other service providers in the transaction chain maintain high security standards in regard to this valuable confidential information. The standards established by CISP evolved into an industry wide security standard in 2004 as the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard. This development was a joint collaboration between Visa and MasterCard. The Visa CISP standard serves a management function as the data security compliance agent for the PCI Data Security Standard. The latest version of the PCI Data Security Standard is v1.1 and while it is under the compliance management of Visa CISP, the PCI standard is owned by the PCI Security Standards Council as of September 7, 2006.
