Carry Over "Carry over" is a term used to describe a scenario in which the holder of a credit card does not pay the full balance or sum of charges in a given statement period. For example, if $1,200 in purchases are made during the statement period but the card holder applies only $1,000 in payment, the remaining $200 is said to "carry over" to the next statement period. The significance of allowing a balance to carry over is that the card's interest rate will be applied to the money and added to the next bill. Although every credit card company has its own method of calculating and applying interest, for the purposes of explanation say that an interest rate of 10 percent applies to the carried over balance of $200. That means that the actual amount that will appear on the next statement is $220 since 10 percent of $200 is $20. More Credit-Card Terms Explained |
