Address Verification Service (AVS) With credit card theft and identity theft on the rise, an Address Verification Service (AVS) is a means of reducing the potential for fraud in credit card transactions placed online, via mail or over the telephone. The basis of AVS is the verification of the cardholder's personal address and correct billing information. When a customer enters the required information to make a purchase, that data passes through the AVS. The system verifies if the address provided matches the billing address on file. If the information does not match, the merchant is given the option of collecting more information or refusing the transaction. The system is transparent to the credit card holder. The AVS determination reaches the merchant via a coded system of ten possible responses. The code "X," for instance, means the information provided matches exactly including a nine-digit zip code. Code "N," on the other hand, indicates that the information does not match. More Credit-Card Terms Explained |
