Credit Card Processor Merchants who wish to accept credit card payments for their products and services require (in addition to a merchant credit card account at a bank) a credit card processor, which is a company that exists to authorize and to settle credit card payments. The credit card processor validates the credit card number and checks that the available credit limit is sufficient to cover the transaction at hand. Normally, these entities handle transactions originating from a number of card types (Visa, Discover, American Express, and MasterCard, for instance) rather than from a single card. If the credit card charges are to be processed at a physical location, the merchant will buy or lease a point of sale terminal through which the card will be "swiped" to begin the transaction process. Online processing procedures will require the installation of a shopping cart configured to work with the card processor's server based system. More Credit-Card Terms Explained |
