Identity Theft Identify theft is a specific form of fraud in which the criminal gains access to the victim's private contact information including name, date of birth, and Social Security number for the purposes of fraudulent financial activity. This may include opening credit card accounts in the name of the victim or charging excessive amounts of merchandise and services on a card whose number has been stolen. The personal information may also be used to acquire other benefits associated with the name of the victim with the aggregate result being serious damage to the credit rating and financial reputation of the victim. The damage done by an instance of identity theft can take months or even years to clear up and causes significant disruption in the life of the victim, even having an adverse effect on their ability to be hired for employment or to rent a living space. Shredding mail and receipts and not allowing your credit card to be taken out of your sight are some of the ways to guard against identity theft as is taking extreme caution with online purchases.
