The USA Today reported that the average credit card debt is over nine thousand dollars a person. Credit card debt can accumulate quickly before you know it after just a few purchases. Most people then only make the minimum payment which is the equivalent of two percent of the balance. This means the average person is paying close to two hundred a month just for their credit card debt.

The numbers continue to get worse as you consider the fact that the average credit card rate is thirteen percent. That means that by paying the minimum amount it would take the average person 291 months to pay off a little over nine thousand dollars. That means over twenty-four years of your life lost to paying for credit card debt.

So it is very important to stay away from credit cards at all possible. However, if you must get a credit card then it is very important that you consider the hidden fees and choose your credit card carefully. The obvious thing you should consider when choosing a credit card is the annual percentage rate or APR.

However, since each credit card has a different billing structure there are other things that you should check as well. These include the participation fee, monthly service charge, over limit fee, phone payment fee, late fee, annual membership fee and credit protection fee.

It is important to what these things since they can take away from your credit limit. Then when you go over your limit you will have additional fees charged which will increase your debt. Therefore, before you select any credit card you should make sure that you make your selection carefully.
