Park and Pay - through credit today Patrons who park their cars in the Plaza Parking Garage will not be required to pay cash for use of the facility anymore. They can pay through credit. This new arrangement is effective from Monday 18th September, 2006. This arrangement is the result of efforts by the city and county to reduce costs. For some time now human cashiers have been replaced by ATM machines which brought down costs. But the hitch was that these machines accepted only cash (currency). Now they will also accept credit. The city and county which have been renting these machines for months now decided to wait until the credit card option has been tested successful before buying it. In the words of city controller, Pat Roller: "Let's wait to see if the credit card works well". Roller said that there's no hurry to buy the new machine with the credit card function. Since the rent the city - county is paying on the old machine will go towards buying the new one, there is no call to rush the purchase. The garage earns approximately $10,000 more than expected in revenue. This is mainly due to an augmentation in customers who park on a monthly basis. The expenses however are equally high - $16,000 more than calculated. This is largely due to the heavy payrolls of cashiers with about $17,000 being paid out as their wages. This means that the losses incurred by the garage are about $10,000 a month. The garage could decrease this loss if it is able to cut back on its staff. And it can cut staff only when there is more automated service. So it has to increase that aspect. As a way of cutting costs the board decided to bring in some changes. From now on cashiers will report to work at 8.00 A.M. instead of 7.15 A.M. This new timing is when they are really needed because business picks up at that hour. Patrons who drive in after 6.00 A.M. will still be given a ticket as well as when they drive out before 6.00 P.M. Discussions are also underway for increasing the hours charged for parking.
